Emerge Grant project for a “Carnival of the Future” exploring the future of art and automation. “Sirens” was conceptualized and built to explore automation within art. A user approaches the machine and begins a dialogue. The art-machine recognizes a human through a series of sensors. If the user or participant satisfies a specific set of commands dictated by a back and forth dialogue they are awarded with a show. The system is controlled by an Arduino micro-controller. An LED array around a piece of frosted plexiglass comprised the language. If certain requirements are met, predetermined by the creator of the system, the show begins and the machine fulfills its duty as an art maker. A built in air compressor provides the kinetic energy and power within the system. The scoops harness the energy and spin the arms in opposite directions which has a moire screen effect. This effect draws the user in for a multi-sensory experience. Art does not simply exist in a white washed room with objects perched upon white washed pedestals. It exists in the future as a wash of sensory experiences. Experiences that can be automated to provoke feeling in ways it never has before.
