"Speaker" is a commissioned installation created for an Acoustical Engineering firm, designed to visually embody the concept of sound propagation. Installed in their fabrication lab and design studio, this piece explores the intersection of movement, perception, and engineering through an interplay of materials and motion.
The design and animation process took shape in Fusion360, allowing for in-depth exploration of the spinning motion and its ability to produce a mesmerizing Moiré effect. The outer ring, crafted from bent and laminated ash strips, was formed using traditional techniques of glue and clamping to achieve its smooth curvature. At the core, the hub—turned from maple—underwent laser etching and embellishment to enhance its visual detail.
Supporting the structure are, laser-cut steel spokes, powder-coated in white to provide contrast against the black light diffuser. The entire wheel assembly is supported by high-performance ball bearings within the hub, ensuring fluid motion for a long time.
Adding to the sensory experience, a rear lightbox features an array of LEDs that illuminate an acrylic diffuser, evenly dispersing light to enhance the visual impact.
With a simple turn, the user sets the wheel in motion and steps back to witness an engaging visual display.
